The last few days have created a number of interesting digital marketing statistics which should interest everyone in the industry. Below are a few which caught our eye:
There was an article in the New York Times on April 17th about how digital media companies are now struggling to grow traffic and increase revenue. But one paragraph specifically mentioned that 85 percent out of every dollar spent on online ads is going to either Facebook or Google. This number seemed a little inflated and the fact is that 75 percent of this income goes to one of the top ten companies. Publishers who are not Google or Facebook can breathe a little easier now.
Snapchat Surpasses a Rival
Instagram has been ranked as the most popular social network among teens for a couple of years now. But that has changed ever since Snapchat burst onto the scene. Researchers now say that 28 percent teens prefer Snapchat as opposed to the 27 percent who prefer Instagram.
According to a recent research, it was found that users who use Instagram believe that mobile is the way to go when it comes to logging in and checking their updates. The study also found out that users of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube relied more on their desktops to surf and connect.
Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. can Smile
1,500 business to consumer marketers were surveyed and it was found that the overall spending on social media advertisements is going to grow at a healthy 18 percent in the year 2016.
Vinyl Records Sold by Chatbots
The Edit, an online vinyl seller, sold over $1 million of records in the last 8 months since its debut. Much of the success of this site is because of their Chabot technology. It uses an algorithm which recommends records on the basis of purchase behavior and other interests. There is a human element involved in this too.
On Tuesday, Oracle Data Cloud and YouTube revealed that they are going to enter into a partnership to offer packaged goods marketer’s data on how ads are affecting in-store purchases. Early tests by Google show that 78 percent of TrueView indicates that offline sales are going up 61 percent for the ads that generated a significant increase in sales.
Young Desktop Listeners
72 percent of users on Spotify are millennials. The more surprising fact here is that 62 percent of these users use their smartphones or tablets to listen to music while 67 percent for every other user.
Consolidating a Marketplace
Rakuten, Dentsu, and IBM were the big companies which swallowed up smaller players over the last couple of months. There were 108 deals made in the 1st quarter itself in the ad tech and marketing space worth $2.4 billion. This was the 3rd largest quarter since data tracking began in this area a couple of years ago.
The big fish were out in force. Why try to compete with someone if you can just buy them out and bring them under your umbrella? It is much smarter business at times to sometimes jut recognize that someone else beat you to it and they have already made a name for themselves in a particular segment. So rather than spend millions of dollars and hire new people who can concoct a worthy rival which could take months, perhaps a year, why not just buy them out? Well, the some of the big players have chosen to do just that.
Political Victory Predictions
Synthesio and Conversocial teamed up to look at digital trends during the NY primary, looking at posts on the Internet about the candidates. They found that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, who eventually won the night for the Democratic and Republican parties, led the online conversations regarding the election. Now if someone could just teach Hilary about why classified information should not be on her individual server, that would be remarkable.
Furthermore, Trump received 68 percent of the GOP buzz and Clinton received 55 percent of the buzz as far as her party was concerned. Perhaps they were speaking about Trump’s excellent idea on why America spends billions of dollars a year to defend Europe when the Europeans are not willing to do it themselves or do not need to since America is doing it. Outstanding job Synthesio and Conversocial!
