Work or marriage, it seems that this age old question has still remained unanswered in the minds of many young entrepreneurs. While some are truly fortunate enough to be passionate about their work or business, others are merely doing it for the bottom line.
But what happens to a marriage when you’re a young professional who has to dedicate all of his/her time in to building and developing your business? It’s easy to put all you energy and dedication into your business, knowing that you will get the personal and monetary satisfaction when you succeed. And in this case, most of us tend to focus more on our work and less on marriage.
It is critical for one to manage to strike a work-marriage life balance as early as possible, because once you’re dedicated to either one; it becomes almost impossible to devote time to the other. Experienced marketers and entrepreneur understand that having to focus on work can lead to side lining your marriage. So, here are some general tips that will allow you to emerge victorious in the battle of work versus marriage:
Work on It
If work is worship, marriage is devotion. Most young businessmen and women tend to neglect to nurture their relationships in the manner in which they achieved their work success. It is understandable if you might not be in the peachiest mood after a 12-hour odd work shift, but it is important to understand that your marriage needs as much care and attention as your business, and things mostly don’t just “fall into place.”
Stay Connected
If you’re busy working, chances are that your partner is equally, if not busier, than you. In such cases, it’s easy to lose touch even with the person who sleeps in the same bed as you! Communicating and being connected in any way you can, will go a long way into your marriage. If you spend the entire day without your spouse at least try going to bed at the same time. More often than not, the conversations you have with your partner at the end of a long and tiring day can be the most meaningful and productive ones.
Avoid Jealousy
Whether you or your partner, or both of you work, there will arise a certain degree of professional jealousy, especially if the person is competitive in nature. Professional jealousy can seriously jeopardize a relationship and it’s important to remember that no matter how successful you or your partner is, you’ll are a collective team. In fact, being a team is part and parcel of a healthy marriage.
House Work
Being busy with work throughout the day can not only side line your spouse, but can also cause problems as to who does what at home, especially if both partners are working. In such scenarios, you could end up having a fight over who does the dishes. As a ground rule, try dividing the housework among the two of you’ll, depending on your physical and schedule’s ability.
Family comes First
Apart from professional jealousy and other work-related problems, some people can be more involved in their work than their marriage, for various reasons. Whatever the case may be, one should never forget that work is work and it will always be there, but family comes first. So, no matter how busy you might be, there’s always ways in which you can put your marriage and/or kids first.
